I think your article hits the mark. I purchased a briefing from c-span by a Naval War College professor, and he made many of the same points, particularly in regards to bringing the middle east into the global economy. He also said that many people want to know "when our boys are coming home?"
His answer...never. Meaning that it is essential to keep a U.S. presence in the middle east.

Thanks. No doubt that Naval War College professor is right about maintaining a permanent presence, but I don't take it as a gloomy assessment. Given the cooperative efforts of the U.S. and Iraqi troops, I don't think a permanent U.S. presence will be considered an occupation. The Iraqis have asked that our troops to remain for at least one more year as army and police continue to come up to speed. We still have soldiers in Germany, and like Germany, Iraq will not always be a war zone.

"Iran is quickly becoming surrounded by American allies"

And that's the whole point. I even got scoffed at once by some one who said, "Oh, so it's about Iran now?"

It was ALWAYS about Iran.

Oh, yeah, another fun fact, Look who's south of the Iraqi border. Another one of those countries we supposedly chose to ignore in the War on Terror.

Hmm. Interesting coincidence...
