Is this really as stupid as it sounds? It comes in the context of the continuing efforts by Senate Democrats to bring about a U.S. capitulation in Iraq -- efforts which are continuing to come up short. One of our "thoughtful" Republicans, Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine, offers a suggestion to the Democratic Senate Majority Leader that she hopes will help in those effort.
Mrs. Snowe called on Mr. Reid to seek a compromise with Republicans.
"I think it is absolutely important to make a [policy] change even if it isn't the kind of change that we truly desire," she said.
Translation: "We must change direction even it takes us where we don't want to go." In The Leadership Moment on page 253 one of the keys to leadership is described this way.
Without a clear sense of destination, we are apt to flounder about, and without knowing how to get to that destination, we will never reach it even when we see it.
In other words, you can't lead if you don't know where you're going. The destination President Bush has chosen is Iraq, to eliminate a hostile regime known for supporting terrorism, harboring terrorists, and for actually using weapons of mass destruction. What Reid and Snowe have in mind is more of a personal destination. Washington. They don't really want to lead us anywhere. They just want to stay in Washington.
I sure am glad that we now have Nouri Al Maliki -- a regional leader of a terrorist group funded by Iran that was responsible for bombing the U.S. embassy in Kuwait.
He's a heck of an improvement -- well worth the spilling of American blood. I wonder when he'll be calling Hugo Chavez, another elected leader you must be proud of.
