Fred Thompson campaigned in downtown Nashua yesterday. At a stop in front of City Hall he said his top priority is national security, which translates to a strong stance on the war in Iraq.
Thompson said he supported the decision to send troops to Iraq rather than let Saddam Hussein continue his abusive reign. Diplomacy and U.N sanctions weren’t working, he said, and if Hussein had obtained weapons of mass destruction, he would have been a danger to the U.S.
“He was on the verge of becoming king of the hill in that part of the world.”
Although the country underestimated the war’s aftermath, it’s now time for the country to unite and show friends and enemies alike that it’s willing to do what it takes to win, he said.
"We are where we are, and the whole world is watching.”
Not everyone in Nashua is tuned into politics. The announcement of Thompson's Nashua campaign stop said he would arrive at City Hall then visit restaurants and sports bars on Main Street, so when we passed by the Peddler's Daughter, our local Irish pub, I asked a waitress who was serving the outside tables if Fred Thompson had been in.
"What's he look like," she asked.
"Tall, bald-headed," I said.
"Might have been," she answered.
I could live with a Fred Thompson presidency.
