It's been my suspicion that the once inevitable Hillary would prevent Barack from being elected this fall if he beat her out of the nomination. There are several reasons she would rather that Obama not ascend to the presidency. One of them is revenge.
Some divorces end in bankruptcy when each side would rather throw away everything than let the other get any of it. It's been said that the Clintons make a point of getting their revenge against those who cross them, and the Democratic party has crossed them. Hillary says she's staying in the race.
Another one is revenge. But this time with a constructive twist.
Political analysts say office seekers who hang on, even long after the race seems futile, may be hoping to position themselves for a later run or to reshape the party more to their liking. They may be bargaining for the vice presidency, feel pressure from supporters or believe there is an off-chance they will get lucky.
The extreme left has taken over the Democratic party, ditching the Clintons in the bargain. The Clintons are poised to make the Democratic party regret its leftward drift. Hillary appears to be forcing Barack to reject her as a running mate as she graciously bows out of the presidential sweepstakes. That does not bode well for the Democratic party or for Barack's chances. Today Bob Novak says,
Clinton backers who will now declare full support for the nominee in public take a different position when promised that their names will not be used. They frankly question whether Obama should be president. I asked one Democrat, a longtime political worker and sometime candidate for public office, whether he actually would vote for Obama. He paused, then replied: "Let me put it this way. I would sleep better if John McCain was president."
Besides all that, Hillary is not done with presidential aspirations. When 2012 rolls around, her chances of winning the Democratic nomination as the maverick challenging an incumbent Democrat will be minuscule. Better to be one of the party faithful hoping to unseat a Republican incumbent. She can torpedo Obama's campaign or bide her time until 2016. I'm betting the torpedo tubes are flooded.
