Dear Senator Ayotte,
Thank you for your continuing efforts to restrain federal spending. It is crucially important to the stability of our country and the well being of its citizens that we put our fiscal house in order.
That said, I don't believe messages about balancing the budget and reducing debt are going to make us the electoral gains we need in 2014 and beyond to actually do anything about spending, deficits, or the debt.
'The pollsters at Gallup wrote last week that Mr. "Obama is on course to have the most politically polarized approval ratings of any president." Segments of the U.S. population see themselves not just in disagreement with the Obama administration, but as the target of its policies.
This includes not only the famous 1%, but also the upper-middle class, Southern states, charter schools, politically active conservatives, private businesses, the Catholic church, electric utilities, doctors driven out of ObamaCare's health networks and those famous partisans, the Little Sisters of the Poor.
All have been vilified, investigated, audited or sued by the president himself, Eric Holder's Justice Department, the National Labor Relations Board, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency and, not least, the Internal Revenue Service. Last year's most remarkable polling number from Gallup said in December that 72% of Americans regard big government as the greatest threat to the U.S. They got the message.'
What I have emphasized above is our winning message. It's negative campaigning to be sure, but when have the Democrats engaged in anything but negative campaigning.
Democrats are the party of government, but, contrary to their claims that they mean to help the disadvantaged, their purpose for government is the employment of more Democrats. You can almost think of it as a business model with government, their product, in unfair competition against the citizens. Think about ObamaCare, its disastrous rollout, and the revelation that the administration knew all along that promises about people being able to keep their policies and doctors were lies. It's an indictment that ObamaCare was never really intended to help anybody except Democrats.
We need to remind voters, day in and day out, that a vote for Democrats is a vote for the power of government brought to bear against its citizens for the benefit of Democrats. I believe it is a message that will resonate.
Thanks for listening.
